Special Issue on Chains of Commitment

This issue of the newsletter is a special issue on the topic of "Chains of Commitment". "Chains of commitment" is a new area in E-commerce which focuses on the automation of the formation of commitments throughout the supply chain when a product or service is promised to a customer. Papers in this issue address several aspects of the "Chains of Commitment". The paper by Ervin introduces the basic concepts on the area and proposes a software architecture that incorporates the key domain abstractions. The paper by Verdicchio and Colombetti describes how multi agent systems can be used to support commitments in supply chain management. The third paper, by Maximilien and Singh, proposes extensions to the current Web services standards, augmenting them with reputation and endorsement capabilities. The paper by Varakantham, Gangwani, and Karlapalem describes how to handle transaction failures in multi agent systems. Finally, the paper by Sabater and Sierra proposes techniques that can be used to improve reputation systems and describes how to integrate such systems with negotiation models.

This issue also presents a EC'01 conference report by David Parkes.

Thank you,
